Sports is an integral part of our lives.Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive mental effects of playing sports. Finding yourself in  a well-acclaimed sports school can help  nurture your  talents in becoming a big sports star.

AB Review has compiled a list of the schools that run the most comprehensive sports programs in Ghana. A number of factors go into this selection with the most weight given to school victories in inter-zonal athletics, football competitions, Sprite Ball Championships and hockey cups. Availability of sporting facilities was also factored in the compilation.


1. Saint Augustine’s College

Outstanding sporting activities: athletics and basketball

Location : Cape Coast

The College’s dominance in the Central Region dates back to the 70s. Between 1977 and 1989, AUGUSCO won the Central Regional Athletic Competition for twelve consecutive years – record which stands to date. This year, the school comprehesively beat all other C/R schools to amass the inter-co trophy. They also won for the first time the Sprite Basketball tourney.


2. Mfantsipim School

Outstanding sporting activities: athletics and basketball, hockey

Location : Cape Coast

The school is a four times historic winner of the sprite ball championship. Mfantsipim School also follows closely with 10 titles on the overall log sheet of the central regional super zonal athletic competitions. The school’s basketball court is one of the best in the country.


3. T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School

Outstanding sporting activities: athletics, soccer, volley ball

Location : Kumasi

Records show that the school once won the National Schools Soccer Competition at the Accra Sports Stadium, and the Girls Volleyball competition at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.  It is difficult to remember the last time the school did not win the Ashanti Region Zonal competitions in athletics. In 2011, a total of nine regional records were broken by the school.


4. Opoku Ware School

Outstanding sporting activities: athletics, soccer

Location : Kumasi

OWASS is another giant in the Ashanti zonal athletics competition. They were crowned the 2007 champions. The 2016 cross country race in the region saw OWASS walking home with the 3rd position. The school at one time held the regional hockey title for a record of 12 years.


5. Koforidua SecTech

Outstanding sporting activities: athletics, soccer, basketball, hockey

Location: Koforidua

The Koforidua Secondary Technical Senior High School (SECTECH), scored 135 points to be crowned winners of the boys division, of the 29th Annual Koforidua Second Cycle Zonal Sports Competition in 2015. They are record holders of the event in the region. The school has an underground hockey stadium, multipurpose tennis, basketball and volleyball court. Only one school comes to mind, when sports is mentioned in the eastern region, Koforidua sec tech!


6. Achimota School

Outstanding sporting activities: Athletics, basket ball

Location : Accra

The maiden edition of the Sprite Ball series boys’ competition was won by Achimota School in 2007. The school is endowed with extensive sports playing fields, a swimming pool, a cricket oval, basketball court, tennis and squash courts, and an arboretum.


7. Prempeh College 

Outstanding sporting activities: athletics, soccer, basketball, hockey

Location : Kumasi

Prempeh College won the Best Sporting School for the 2012/2013 academic year in Ashanti Region by amassing four trophies including Regional Basketball, Hockey, Handball and Interco competitions


8. Pope John Seminary

Outstanding sporting activities: athletics, soccer

Location : Koforidua

Pope John Seminary is among the names of schools with impressive performances at the sprite ball championship. Pope John placed 3rd in the 2016 game by beating OWASS 26-19. The school has also posted impressive performaces in soccer winning one time the National Milo Championship.


9. Keta Secondary School

Outstanding sporting activities: athletics

Location : Keta

Keta Senior High School boasts of being among the few schools in the Volta Region that have had a taste of championship in the sprite ball competition placing third three consecutive times.


10. Wesley Girls High School

Outstanding sporting activities: athletics, basketball

Location : Cape coast

When it comes to girls division sports, Wesley Girls High is a name you can’t pass by in the Central Region. They are always among the top 3 in all competiotions: atheltics, basketball and hockey.


11. Acherensua Senior High

Outstanding sporting activities; athletics, soccer

Location : Acherensua

Acherensua Senior High School (SHS) emerged Champions of the Boys’ football of the 20th edition of the Milo Schools’ Sports Festival when they defeated Tamale SHS 2-1 in the final match played at the Baba Yara sports stadium in 2009. The school is consistently ranked among the very best in the regional inter-co.


12. Kumasi Wesley Girls

Outstanding sporting activities; athletics, Volley ball, hockey

Location : Kumasi

The school always makes impressive appearances at all regional athletic competitions. Kumasi Wey Gey Hey last year beat for the first time TI AMASS in the girls’ division of the Ashanti Regional inter-co. They placed second in this year’s competition.


13. Tamale Senior High

Outstanding sporting activities; athletics, soccer

Location : Tamale

The school is the sport powerhouse  in the northern region, sweeping most of its regional competitions.
