The Commonwealth Scholarships are offered to students who come from developing Commonwealth countries and want to pursue Master’s and PhD study in the UK. UK Department for International Development (DFID) fund these scholarships every year.  This is a full scholarship which covers tuition and examination fees, personal maintaining allowance, thesis grant (if applicable) and provides airfare to and from United Kingdom, initial arrival allowance, etc. The scholarship allows you to study at any of the UK universities with which the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) has a part funding agreement.

The scholarships are given to postgraduate students across all fields including biological sciences, social sciences, humanities, commercial, engineering, arts, etc. Visit the website of the institution you wish to attend to learn about the programs offered by the university. Note that CSC’s selection criteria give priority to applications that demonstrate the strongest relevance to development


To be considered for the award, candidates must:

  • Be a Commonwealth citizen, refugee, or British protected person
  • Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country. Visit here ( for a full list of eligible countries
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/ October
  • by October of the year you intend to start, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)

How to Apply for the Scholarships

Firstly, apply to a nominating body (see link below) – the CSC does not accept direct applications. The nominating body may be a national nominating agency (see or selected universities/university bodies, (visit or selected non-governmental organisations and charitable bodies.

All applications must be made through a nominating body. Each body is responsible for its own selection process. Be sure to check with your nominating body for their specific advice and rules for applying, and for their own closing date for applications.
