WESLEY GIRLS’ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
WESLEY GIRLS’ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
About: AB REVIEW SAYS Established in 1896 and named after John Wesley, founder of the Methodist church, Wesley girls High School has stayed true to its remarkable history as one of the leading senior high schools in the country providing top-notch facilities and a congenial environment for studies. Setting and breaking their own records, their academic performance is envied by its competitors. Aside academics, students perform outstandingly in sports and other extracurricular activities. The old student association is a thriving one, highly networked and consistently supporting their Alma Mata. Wey Gey Hey( as they are nicknamed) is a leader in the training of students. Students are trained to right the wrongs in the society which is in unison with the school’s motto. The school, however, has been criticized for being overly strict and for prohibiting final year students from seeing or calling their parents completely during the term. This may not be such a hard price to pay considering the excellent academic records they produce each year. STUDENTS SAY “…” Students appreciate the high level of discipline portrayed by school and the neat environment it offers. The ability to wear mufti attire after class hours make students feel at home in school. Interesting comments made by respondents: while some called for an extension of resting hours, others called for the extension of the preps time. Students wish for more time for computer training and more variety in the school’s menu. Trafficking to the chapel (filing to the chapel) is a sight to behold. One prefect sums it up this manner “A Wesley girls high school training nurtures one to be socially responsible, disciplined and above all unique in her disposition. The school was founded by the wife of the 2nd Methodist Missionary to the Gold Coast, Mrs. Harriet Wrigley in 1836 with 25 girls. Her aim was to give the girls basic training in housekeeping and catechism. Subjects taught included writing, reading, sewing and religious education. Classes were held at the Manse, in the Standfast Hall near the Victoria Park in Cape Coast. However, five months after arrival, Mrs. Wrigley died. It was not until 1837 that an efficient school head in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth Waldron took over the running of the school. She administered the school for 43 good years and laid a solid foundation for what was to become the Wesleyan Girls’ School and Training Home .To provide a holistic and quality education in partnership with stakeholders to produce God-Fearing, well-balanced, disciplined and self-confident individuals capable of taking the challenges of a fast-changing world in their stride. • Creating a propitious environment for the spiritual and moral development of each girl. • Providing what it takes to attain and sustain the highest academic standard.
