Ghana’s international educational system offers a variety of Curriculums (British, American, German, French, Islamic, Dutch) and/or the International Baccalaureate system (IB). The IB offers high quality programs of international education to a worldwide community of schools with a three level program: the Primary Years (PS grade 5), the Middle Years (grade 6 -10 and the IB Diploma (grades 11 -12). There are more than 838,000 IB students at 3,003 schools in 139 countries.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) aims to do more than other curricula by developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed. The IB is different from other curricula because it:
- encourages students to think critically and challenge what they are told
- is independent of governments and national systems, and therefore able to incorporate best practice from a range of international frameworks and curricula
- encourages students to consider both their local and international environment.
The IB programme is a clear affirmation of Alvin Toffler’s quote; “the illiterate of the future will not be the person who cannot read. It will be the person who does not know how to learn”. IB incorporates life-learning traits into pupils and students.
Schools that offer the IB programme must go through a rigorous academic and infrastructure assessment. In Ghana, only five schools have sucesssfully gone through the IB assessment. These are the top schools in Ghana offering the IB programmes:
